Alice I Have Been

author: melanie benjamin
thing that drew me in: amazon book review. should have remembered my unease with works "based on" truth and history. leaves me itchy to know what is fact and what is fiction
reason for reading: fun

Hmm. This book took me a long time to like. But then I suddenly found myself turning pages as quickly as I could and not wanting to put it down. Meanwhile, and sadly, my book a week is dreadfully off schedule.
An interesting read. I loved the manner of writing. I liked the character of Alice that Ms. Benjamin created. I liked that she created a version of explanation so as to not make me entirely have to guess. I found her explanations reasonable and the story consistent with the known actions of the characters involved. I love that at the end she created a list of real or nots. Satisfied my curious nature.

favorite description of human nature: Alice's late in age understanding of her relationship with her husband and how that relationship was defined by those of her past
favorite character: Alice, of course, though I was so disappointed to see her become the parts of her mother that she most resented growing up. a cautionary tale, perhaps?
